Everything Lubbock property managers look at during a final walk-through, organized room by room, plus the mistakes that cost renters the most money.

Every month, hundreds of Lubbock renters hand over their keys and wait anxiously for a deposit refund. The ones who get the full amount back almost always have one thing in common: they cleaned to the standard the property manager was going to inspect against — not just the standard that “looked fine” on the way out the door. This checklist is that standard, built from what we see on move-out inspections across Lubbock every week.

Why the final inspection matters so much in Texas

Under Texas Property Code Chapter 92, a landlord may deduct from your security deposit for damages and for cleaning beyond “normal wear and tear.” That phrase does a lot of work. A worn carpet path is wear and tear. A greasy oven, soap-scummed shower or dusty blinds are not — and they are the most common deductions we see on Lubbock itemized statements. The Texas Attorney General’s renters’ rights page is worth reading before you move, because it also explains the 30-day refund timeline and your right to an itemized list of deductions.

Before you start: get the complex’s own checklist

Most larger Lubbock apartment communities — especially those near Texas Tech — have a written move-out checklist. Ask for it. If they inspect against a list, you should clean against the same list. If they don’t have one, this guide covers everything they’ll look at anyway.

Kitchen (where most deductions happen)

  • Oven: inside, racks, door glass and the drawer underneath. Baked-on grease is the single most common cleaning charge in Lubbock.
  • Refrigerator: empty it, remove and wash shelves and drawers, wipe the gaskets, clean behind and under if it rolls out.
  • Microwave: inside, turntable and the underside if it’s a range hood model.
  • Stovetop and hood: drip pans, burner grates, the filter in the hood.
  • Cabinets and drawers: wipe inside and out, including the tops of upper cabinets where dust and grease collect.
  • Sink and faucet: descale the hard-water build-up (more on that below) and shine the fixture.
  • Dishwasher: run it empty, clean the filter and wipe the door edges.

Bathrooms

  • Scrub tub, shower walls and grout. Lubbock’s hard water leaves a white film on glass and tile that a normal spray won’t remove — use a descaling product.
  • Toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it.
  • Vanity, mirror, cabinets and drawers inside and out.
  • Exhaust fan cover and light fixtures.
  • Floors mopped and corners detailed.

Bedrooms, living areas and closets

  • Baseboards hand-wiped. Inspectors run a finger along them.
  • Blinds dusted slat by slat; window sills and tracks vacuumed and wiped.
  • Ceiling fans and light fixtures.
  • Closet shelves and rods wiped, closet floors vacuumed.
  • Walls spot-cleaned for scuffs; nail holes patched if your lease requires it.
  • Doors, door frames and light switches.

Whole-apartment details people forget

  • Air vents and returns (dust shows immediately).
  • Inside the washer and dryer if they’re provided, including the lint trap.
  • Patio or balcony swept, cobwebs cleared.
  • Trash removed — leaving bags in the unit is a common charge.
  • Carpets vacuumed; many Lubbock leases require professional carpet cleaning with a receipt.

The West Texas factor: dust and hard water

Two things make a Lubbock move-out clean harder than one in Austin or Dallas. First, caliche dust: it settles on every horizontal surface and inside every track, and an empty apartment makes it obvious. Second, hard water: the USGS classifies much of the South Plains as having very hard water, which leaves mineral scale on faucets, shower doors and tile that reads as “dirty” to an inspector even after a normal wipe-down.

Should you do it yourself or hire a pro?

If you have a full day, the right products and a tolerance for scrubbing ovens, you can absolutely do this yourself. The math changes when the deposit is large, the unit is big, your timeline is tight, or you’re moving out of state. A professional move-out clean in Lubbock usually costs far less than the cleaning charge on an itemized deduction, and it comes with the inspection experience that a checklist alone can’t give you.

Whichever way you go, start early, work top-to-bottom in each room, and do a final walk-through with this list in hand. Your future self, holding a full deposit refund, will thank you.

Quick answers

How long does a move-out clean take?

For a one-bedroom apartment, plan on 4–6 hours solo, or 2–3 hours for a two-person crew. Larger homes scale up from there. Inside-the-oven and fridge work is where most of the time goes.

Do I need to clean the carpet myself?

Check your lease. Many Lubbock complexes require professional carpet cleaning with a receipt. If so, vacuuming alone won’t satisfy the inspection.

What if the apartment was dirty when I moved in?

Your move-in inspection form and dated photos are your protection. You’re responsible for cleaning beyond the condition you received — document that condition and keep the records.
