Every May and every August, thousands of Texas Tech students face the same crunch: finals, a lease ending, a car that has to be packed, and a landlord who will inspect the apartment the moment the keys hit the office counter. Move-out cleaning is the task that gets squeezed — and it’s the one that decides whether the deposit comes back. Here’s how to handle it.
Know your dates before anything else
Write down three dates: your last final, your lease end, and the date you physically have to be out. The cleaning has to happen after the furniture leaves and before the inspection. If those two events are the same afternoon, you have a problem — solve it now by scheduling movers a day earlier, or booking a same-day professional clean for the gap.
What Lubbock student complexes actually check
Complexes near campus process a huge volume of move-outs in a short window, so they inspect fast and from a list. The items that show up on deduction statements again and again:
- Inside the oven and microwave
- Inside the refrigerator (and whether it was left on or off per lease)
- Shower and tub soap scum and hard-water film
- Dust on blinds, fans and baseboards
- Carpet stains and whether the carpet was professionally cleaned if required
- Trash and personal items left behind
- Nail holes and wall scuffs
Pull your lease and your complex’s move-out checklist. Many require a carpet-cleaning receipt or charge a flat cleaning fee regardless; knowing that changes how much DIY effort makes sense.
The roommate problem
Shared apartments fail inspections because everyone assumes someone else cleaned the kitchen. Decide early: either split the rooms by name and date, or split the cost of one professional clean. A single clean divided three or four ways is often the cheapest and least stressful option, and it removes the “whose turn” argument entirely. Designate one person to hand off a key or code and to receive the confirmation.
A realistic DIY timeline
- One week out: start purging. Donate, sell or trash anything not making the trip. A cleaner apartment is faster to clean.
- Two to three days out: deep-clean the kitchen appliances while you still have time. Oven cleaner needs dwell time.
- Move day: furniture out first, then clean top-to-bottom, room by room. Finish with floors.
- Before keys: walk every room with the complex’s checklist. Photograph everything, timestamped.
For parents handling it from out of town
A large share of the student move-outs we clean are booked by parents in Dallas, Houston, Midland or out of state who simply want it handled. It’s easy: send us the address, the inspection date and how we’ll get in, and we’ll clean to the complex’s standard and confirm when it’s done. No one has to drive to Lubbock for a cleaning day.
Your rights on the deposit
Texas landlords must return your deposit, or an itemized list of deductions, within 30 days of move-out under Property Code Chapter 92 — but only if you’ve given a forwarding address in writing. Do that before you leave. The Attorney General’s renters’ rights guide explains what to do if the refund doesn’t come.
When hiring help is the smart call
If the deposit is more than a few hundred dollars, the apartment is big, the timeline is tight, or you simply have finals to pass, a professional apartment move-out clean pays for itself. Our Lubbock crew cleans Tech-area apartments all semester and knows exactly what the complexes look for. Good luck on finals.
Quick answers
When is the busiest move-out week in Lubbock?
The last two weeks of May and the first two weeks of August. Book cleaning at least a week ahead during those windows.
Can my parents book the cleaning for me?
Absolutely. Many of our student move-outs are arranged by parents out of town. We just need the address, access details and the inspection date.
Should roommates split one clean?
It’s usually the cheapest and least stressful option. One flat price divided by the number of roommates beats arguing over whose turn it is.
